When was Marijuana made illegal in India?

Does anyone have any factual or anecdotal knowledge of this? I've heard somewhere that Nixon stepped in and (more or less) politically threatened India to make it illegal in exchange for taking off trade sanctions. Just to be clear, I don't really want to know your opinion on this topic.
